POSTECH Professor Dong-Pyo Kim (CE) developed a technology that prevents the exposure of nocuous chemicals during the manufacturing process  of toxic chemicals. Professor Kim’s research team made a sealed-up chemical reaction system using a special nanowire separator, which is water-proof for every solvent. When volatile toxic mixtures are separated, a perfectly sealed process is idealistic, but the previous method contains a high risk of exposure. The research team harnessed the superamphiphobic (both superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) property of silicon nanowire and efficiently separated the nocuous gaseous substances. Furthermore, they shortened the elapsed time of the whole process by enhancing its efficiency. Results were published in Nature Communications on Feb. 26.
