Whenever a Postechian or a group of Postechian try to do something that is beneficial to POSTECH or the public interests, they meet an obstacle, money. Often, it is hard to overcome this obstacle. The 27th general students’ association wants to help and created a budget autonomy system. After budget autonomy system was built, DAP, Adrip, POSTECH Hackathon and Porori have used the system. The Postech Times investigated the criteria and application process.
The purpose of budget autonomy system is activating self-governing activity and promoting various activities through financial support. According to the regulations, only regular members of the group could apply. The processes to use the system are easy; the representatives draw up a paper according to application form and submit the paper at the office of the general students’ association or through email at exe-30@postech.ac.kr. From the interview with the student president, Kim Sang su (LIFE 13), The Postech Times obtained more details. After candidate submitting, the president of central executive committee examines expected problems, which is probably solved through a discussion with the members of the committee, and examines whether candidates are regular members or not. If not, the process is terminated. Next, applicants must meet the central management committee. The student president said, “If the candidate really wants to receive the money from the system, he/she should come to the meeting to express his/her opinion”. The general students’ association must organize 5 percent of the budget for the system, and four hundred thousand KRW is provided for each program approved. Even though the money is assigned specifically as fewer than 4 hundred thousand per one project, the reason why the representative should go the meeting is because the money can be assigned maximum 1/4 of the organized budget  if 2/3 of the members of the central management committee agree with that.
Over the past 2 years, Postechians who have used the system are LinQ, Hackathon, DAP, Porori, Adrip, and the student president. LinQ used it to publish of their own book, Hackathon to host an event, DAP for design experience and making custom tumbler, Adrip to hold a seminar, and the student president to organize a performance to oppose the shut-down system. All of them have given Postechians something fresh. Porori made diaries for Postechians, and, admirably, they will use the profits to help sex slaves in Korea.
