The presidential election in the United States is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov 8 2016. There are two political parties in the United States: the republicans and the democrats. Bernie Sanders, Hilary Clinton, and Donald Trump have indisputably been the hottest figures in politics for the past few months. Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are leading the president primaries in the Republican party while Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are competing against each other in the Democratic party. Currently, Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton are dominant in each of the parties. As speculations regarding reversals in ranking on Super Tuesday were made, the results still seemed unpredictable. However, as Trump and Clinton managed to win by a landslide on Super Tuesday on Mar. 15 over 5 different states, the candidates from both parties were virtually set in stone.
Donald Trump
Donald Trump is a real estate billionaire. Trump World Tower, a 72 story building located in New York City, just by itself cost 325 million dollars. The word that would define his character would be “extreme”. He does not hesitate to say what he wants to say. He would slander other candidates or people right in front of him, make a remark about international relations that is not always true. Such attitude makes him widely condemned even by celebrities through SNS’s like Twitter or Facebook. Despite such extremity, he is still very popular. Perhaps this is because because he is rich enough to speak bluntly about possible sources of political funds and satisfy the thirst of those feeling public alienation in politics.
Bernie Sanders
It was not expected that a former senator from Vermont would be so competitive against Clinton in the beginning. Sanders’ main initiatives include increased minimum wage, free tuition in public colleges and universities, health care for all citizens, and breakup of financial institutions, appealing to the basic needs of the lower and middle classes. Thus he is particularly supported by those in their teenage and twenties who have difficulty finding jobs. He said that it is illogical that in the richest country in the history of the world, millions of young people are unable to find jobs and begin their careers.
Hilary Clinton
Formerly known as the first lady, Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton is making her way to becoming the first female president of the United States. Her major initiatives are similar to those of Bernie Sanders but different in details. She also mentioned that she will make an environment where students can study at universities without getting student loans by halving the current tuition. In contrast, the increment in her tax plan for wage earners was less drastic than that of Sanders’.
