POSTECH Presents an Honorary Doctorate to President Hong Seok-hyun

Hong Seok-hyun, the president of Korea Joongang Daily and JTBC received an honorary doctorate from POSTECH. This is the first time for POSTECH to present such an honor to a Korean citizen. POSTECH announced President Hong as an honorary doctorate of Electrical Engineering and on the following Feb. 19th, President Hong received the doctorate at the 2015 Graduation Ceremony.
POSTECH highly esteems President Hong’s active patronage for various groups such as enterprise companies, administrative organizations, journalism, and academics, with backgrounds in natural sciences and engineering. Also, President Hong’s active support for the academic individuals who can practically ameliorate their societies corresponded with the members of POSTECH.
President Hong was born in Seoul, 1949, graduated Seoul National University with a major in electrical engineering, and received a master's degree and doctorate from Stanford University. Later on, he conducted research at the World Bank, Korea Development Institute, etc. In 1994, he was inaugurated as president of Korea Joongang Daily. Walking along the path of journalists, he also served as the president of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers and Korea Newspapers Association, comprehensively giving out his efforts for the development and cooperation of central and regional media. Furthermore, he served as an ambassador to the United States, endeavoring for intimate relationship between the US and Korea. Byeang Hyean Kim, Dean of Graduate Schhool of POSTECH said, “President Hong, who has worked in numerous areas and become a world-renowned intellectual, is a good role model for POSTECH students,” reasoning that President Hong deserved an honorary doctorate.
Meanwhile, POSTECH is presenting honorary doctorates to those who have hugely contributed to the advancement of the global society or who have become world-leading authories in academic realms.
