Having started on Dec. 22, 2015, the renovation work for the main street of campus is scheduled to be finished on May 31, 2016. Entrance was restricted from Dec 22, 2015 to Feb 28, 2016. The renovation may seem abrupt and unexpected at a glance for some people. However, in fact, it had been planned and organized since 2014 in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the school. In 2014, the school conducted an idea contest in order to set a direction for the renovation work. Ideas from eight different teams with one from students and the other seven from the staff were proposed. Then design outsourcing proceeded until early 2015. The renovation aims to construct a new conception of campus environment mainly by reconstructing the square and pond. This is to make the campus symbolic, creative, economical, and practical: symbolic as the campus is a place that conveys the identity of POSTECH; creative as the campus is an unconstrained environment that fosters ingenious and imaginative thinking; economical as the project seeks to take advantage of conventional materials and facilities; practical as all members of POSTECH can use the place as a means to communicate with each other.
The renovation work stretches over three zones, which cover 15,600 of area in total. The three zones are named zone A, B, and C. A-zone will be divided into Postechian Garden and POSTECH Canal Walk. Postechian Garden is designed to provide a green belt where Postechians can gather around, communicate with each other, and even take a rest. POSTECH Canal Walk consists of two parts, each using hexagonal and curved patterns of pavement. They will be surrounded by waterways and flower boxes. This can be seen as an attempt to break from the conventional straight line design. B-zone will be designated for Cosmic Square, and C-Zone will become Historic Hill. The material of the tiles, which were once said to resemble those found in bathrooms and swimming pools will be replaced. Also, diverse kinds of trees will be planted along each zone, making a verdant atmosphere. Tables, parasols, and chairs will be placed throughout the zones. LED lights will be implemented both on and above the floor in order to lighten the ways at night. In terms of previous decorations and equipment, such as the statues, fountain, flower boxes, and so on, some will be removed, some will be moved to other locations, and the rest will be partially reformed and reused.
