On Jan. 4th 2016, raising university tuition fees for under/post graduate students of POSTECH was decided upon by a tuition inquiry commission. The fees were increased by 1.5%, the first increase since 2011. According to the raised tuition fees, the undergraduate students are now to pay 2,830,000 KRW for every term, starting from this year.
In fact, the POSTECH tuition inquiry commission has been debating on raising university tuition fees during the last five years, citing several reasons such as continuous domestic inflation and relatively high percentage of POSTECH students receiving scholarships. However, the issue of raising the fees had been objected every time, until now. “In account of increasing tuition fees, welfare budgets for students will likely be secured further”, said Sang-su Kim, the president of the POSTECH Student Union. Further, he acknowledged that, “Increasing tuition fees will, according to the Student Union, generate 1.1 billion KRW that will be used to repair Atlas Hall, the student cafeteria, and other necessary facilities.
