Prof. Cha, Hyung Joon (CE) and his research team developed a biologically favorable biomaterial by using the silk-like protein (named “aneroin”) found in the skin and tentacle of the sea anemone. The research results were published in the journal Biomarcromolecule on Nov. 5, an authorative journal in the field of biomaterials.
To fabricate the hydrogel, the research team employed photoinitiated dityrosine cross-linking. Properties of the silk protein put it in the limelight as its stiffness is about 10 times of that of animal’s heart or muscle.
It is expected to be utilized as delivery vehicles and as supporting materials to incubate stem cells inside human bodies.
