Some Postechians become addicted to computer games. This has become an issue at POSTECH. Since 2010, Student Union had been asked to solve this problem. Continuously, the Union  had tried to communicate with unviersity athority to deliver Postechians' opinions.
Since Aug. 2014, this problem has been handled based on the data analysis of the Internet usages, and game regulation was first enforced on Mar. 1 2015. It was decided that the regulation should be enforced for 6 months (Mar. 1 - Aug. 31) and then reevaluated. With the appointment of the new president and executives, the trial period was extended for about a month. The policy was abandoned on Sep 22. The Office of Admissions and Students Affairs announced that a warning system and communication with advisor professors would be conducted instead of regulation policy. Also, the Office said that it would not ignore its responsibility to help students who fall into indulgence, although it will respect students’ autonomy and responsibility.
During 7 months, there were some controversies about the policy’s efficiency and justification. All students were restricted even though the vast majority wasn’t having gaming-related problems. Also, there were limitations for analyzing all Internet usages and other routes through which students could connect to the Internet.
During the period and even before it was enforced, many Postechians opposed this policy. For example, Student Union made a banner that displayed students’ messages on the 78 stairs and conducted a survey to collect student's opinions about this policy. Also, some Postechians conducted game relay events in the Student Union building for 48 hours from Aug. 31 to Sep. 2, where Postechians gathered to play games and broadcasted it through the Internet. It was even introduced on the website NAVER.
POSTECH has cancelled the regulation policy. However, how students act now is important. When autonomy is given to Postechians, they should be able to take responsibility for their behaviors.
