Students' Essays Suggest the Way Korea Should Go Onward

The POSTECH Tae-Jun Park Future Strategic Laboratory held the awards presentation of “2015 Under/post Graduate Essay Contest” from Apr. 1 to May 31 at the POSCO International Center. This contest drew particularly high participation, receiving applications from 53 Korean universities and 57 foreign universities (179 students), including Tunisia University, Tilburg University, and Hanoi University.
<How far have you prepared for prevention of epidemic?> written by 5th year students, Yu-jin Park and Yun-jung Park, who both major in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Ihwa Woman University, and <Practice voicing your opinion> written by POSTECH post graduate student Suk Jin Mun, who majors in Fusion Biotechnology, got the first place scholarship of 3 million KRW. For the second place scholarship, which is 1.5 million KRW, 10 essays, including 3rd year student Ji-seop Kim’s <The necessity of the reformation of universities along with changeable society and actualized measures>, were selected.
POSTECH Chair Prof. Lee, Jin Woo (HSS) announced at the congratulatory address that “Under/post graduate students’ essays give hopeful solutions even during this defective time”.
The final evaluation was done by Yonsei University Sociology Professor Kim, Wang Bae, Seoul National University Korean Language and Literature Professor Bang, Min-Ho, and Professor Jun, Sang-In at Seoul National University Graduate School of Environment, who are all POSTECH Tae-Jun Park Future Strategic Laboratory researchers. Following is the commentary of the judges.
This year’s POSCO essay contest not only had a high participation rate, but also showed unprecedentedly high quality. Individuals and teams dealt with the given essay questions creatively, at a professional level. From the arguments of under/post graduate students, the judges could understand the concerns of young people and empathize with their perspectives of this world.
