OLED displays contain organic materials that are vulnerable to oxygen and moisture. Encapsulation is a process required to protect the organic layer and modules of OLED from water and oxygen in the atmosphere. A team of Professor Tae Woo Lee (MSE) and Min Ho Park (MSE Ph.D. Candidate) has announced a novel method of encapsulation called Flex Lami-capsulation through issue 29 of Advanced Materials, published on Aug. 5.
Flex Lami-capsulation not only efficiently protects the organic materials but is also suitable for flexible displays. The conventional encapsulation method using glass was not applicable to flexible displays since it was inflexible. Putting thick film on an inorganic layer was suggested as an alternative, but it was limited in commercializing due to its high production cost and long process time. Flex Lami-capsulation utilizes thin metal foils and elastic polymer membranes.
The research team claims that the technology is simple, effective, and applicable to roll-to-roll process for mass production.
