POSTECH developed a solar cell that is invulnerable to folding. The research team of Professor Kil-won Cho (CE), Kim Min (CE Ph.D.) and Park Jong Hwan (CE Ph.D.) announced this technology, which will provide a significant improvement in flexible solar cells through horizontal structure, in the prestigious journal Advanced Energy Materials.
This organic solar cell has a horizontal shape rather than a vertical one. Because of the horizontal structure, it can use a single layer and keep the photoelectric efficiency even if folded thousands of times. Also, since this horizontal organic solar cell makes electrodes patterning in the early stage, there is no need to process the cells several times; they are completed in a single coating.
This technology is expected to contribute to the commercialization of the next generation of solar cells by simplifying the complicated device process and leading to the development of light and foldable solar cells.
This research is supported by the Global Frontier Business initiated by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.
