On Feb. 11, the Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering & Korea Atomic Energy Enterprise Association (KAEEA) and the POSTECH Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering co-hosted the 1st Nuclear Power Technical Seminar. It was held from 10 A.M. - 4:55 P.M. and all Postechians were welcomed. The seminar aimed to deliver a general introduction to the decommissioning and decontamination of the nuclear facilities, prospects on global nuclear market, and technical understanding on current status. Attendees said the eastern coast of Gyeongbuk Province has a pivotal role for energy supply but the industrial foundation is weak and falls behind other regions. They also said a research institute for technology on dissolving nuclear energy should be established in Gyeongju to balance the development in Korea and show the government’s will to support the nuclear power plant in this region. Hakhong Kim, head of the Department of Creative Economic Industries in Gyeongbuk, emphasized that Gyeongbuk has been preparing a business model for decommissioning the technology of the nuclear facility, which is considered a new ocean of opportunity, since 2012.
