Surprisingly, if thin metal material is put between superconductors’ film, electricity flows without heating, even if superconductors don’t contact each other. This phenomenon is called josephson junction . Using graphene, the research team of POSTECH actually created a short ballistic josephson junction, which had been predicted only theoretically.
The joint research team of Professors Hu-Jong Lee (PHYS) and Seung-Hoon Jhi (PHYS), Gil-Ho Lee (PHYS Ph.D.), and Sol Kim (PHYS Ph.D. candidate) made a vertical josephson junction, which is put between 2 superconductors like a sandwich. This is the first time this has ever been accomplished and was published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Communications.
Prof. Lee commented that the research is expected to be used to control the device structure of atom units and develop various graphene-superconductivity quantum devices widely. This research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea through Science Research Center (SRC) and Global Frontier Research program (GFR).
