Two graduate students received a thesis paper award. Tae-hee Han (MSE Ph.D. integrated) received the “Chang Kun Soo Thesis Paper Award” for his thesis “Flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes” and Do-hyeong Kim (Mathematics of Quantum Field Theory  in Center for Geometry and Physics, Post Doc.) received the “Sung-Kee Chung Thesis Paper Award” for his thesis “Flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes”. The Chang Kun Soo Thesis Paper Award is given for an engineering achievement and the Sung-Kee Chung Thesis Paper Award is given for natural science research. Tae-hee Han and Do-hyeong Kim shared their feelings about receiving the award.
Tae-hee Han: In 2006, I was admitted to the Material Science program of POSTECH and by the time I graduated the Ph.D. integrated course, it took 9 years. Finally ending the life in Pohang, I am very glad to receive the Chang Kun Soo Thesis Paper Award and complete my doctor’s degree. I want to express my gratitude to many people, especially my Advisor Professor Tae-woo Lee for teaching me considerately to set a research direction. The encouragement from Prof. Lee was extremely helpful when I was tired of research with peers and seniors. I will never forget his direction and assistance.
The award-winning thesis, “Flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Graphene Anode”, focuses on light technology and a flexible display that can be developed to be portable, rollable, and wearable. The research improves graphene, a transparent diode, to make flexible organic light-emitting diode with high efficiency. I am grateful to my peers in our research team and to the corporation team for their efforts to develop flexible organic light-emitting diodes.
I feel a little nervous to receive this award as a representative of other superior students. But for that reason, I will consider this award a boost for me to take a step forward and try to become an independent researcher with wide perspectives and wide experiences in diverse fields.
Do-hyeong Kim: Of course, I was very pleased to know I was selected to receive this prestigious award. I put a lot of work into the research and composition and I am glad it has been evaluated so highly. I was even more pleased when I realized Sung-Kee Chung is the founder of the Aun Lectures series.
On the occasion of the lecture, POSTECH invites a renowned scholar from the world, and I remember three mathematicians who visited POSTECH in order to deliver the lecture, as well as a lecture series organized by the mathematics department. Among them, the lectures delivered by J.P. Serre and D. Zagier were highly influential to the lines of my thought.
Live lectures by such masters inevitably contain a number of intangible messages, whose nature is hard to describe in words. It can be about one's taste, brilliance, obsession, dream, desperation, joy, or fear. Reflecting upon these messages, one gets closer to the heart of the subject. Without any doubt, I am one of those who enjoyed such reflections, and deeply grateful to Sung-Kee Chung for this reason. Of course, it only adds more excitement to receiving this charming award.
