New Bioadhesive Protein, Originated from Mussels

Kang Hochang, a representative of dental material enterprise “Purgo”, made a contract about com- mercialization of “dental bone filler binder using bioadhesive protein origi- nated from mussel” with the POSTECH Research team of Professor Cha Hyeong-joon (CE) and the Business Development Foundation in the Korea Institute of Material Science & Technology Promotion (KIMST) on Nov. 4th. Purgo also discussed the details of technology fees that will be given to POSTECH after it is commercialized.
The bioadhesive protein from mussel was developed by Prof. Cha, with the idea to copy the adhesive material of mussels and use gene re-design technology to make a high functional bioadhesive material that is harmless to the human body. In addition to its harmlessness, this material is strongly adhesive to diverse surfaces even in water.
Purgo has been directing the research regarding commercialization through the ocean bioengineering technology development project of POSTECH and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries since 2013. According to this contract, it plans to commercialize the product in two years.
