Two ME students under Professor Sang-Joon Lee (ME) made POSTECH proud in academics. Eui-Jae Lee (ME Ph.D. candidate) and Ki-Woong Kim (ME M.S.-Ph.D. Integrated candidate) got best paper award from The Wind Engineering Institute of Korea (WEIK) and from The Korean Society of Visualization (KSVI), respectively.
Lee researched maple seed’s drop. Maple spreads its seed through wind for reproduction. The seed rotates fast when dropping slowly in spite of its heavy weight. It makes the seed remain in the air longer and the seed is able to travel farther from its mother. This is autorotation. He researched the effect of the initial altitude on the autorotational flight of a maple seed to demonstrate the autorotation using an Acer Palmatum seed.
Kim researched the interaction of nanoparticles and nanoporous membranes via penetration. He analyzed their properties using an Au nanoparticle and membrane in nano size and compared the degree of the particle’s movement depending on each property of the membrane. The result can be applied to various industrial fields and it is evaluated as basic research for the effective movement of particles.
