The aesthetics of time sounds very attractive because everybody in this era considers time pressure very effective. The word “fast” is also spread everyday through TV, promoting its importance. So, people live faster and faster to keep up with the fast pace of modern society.
However, there are some movements to support “slow” against the fast society. Those people do slow food, slow ware, slow city, etc. movements. For example, Officina Slowear, an Italian clothes company, manages all of the processes to make clothes. It takes a lot more time than ready-made products, but guarantees that customers realize how to enjoy patience and know the delight following patience. Slow city appears in belief that maturity, quality, profundity and dignity are more important than growth, quantity, and speed in life. Two authors, Choi Bokhyeon and Jeong Guyeong, gave Postechians advice about why slowness is necessary.
What is the relationship between leisureliness and aesthetics of slow?
A: A leisurely lifestyle is made by yourself. You can get free time if you plan and do not to overfill your available time. However, aesthetics of slowness is different from laziness. In contrast to laziness, diligent people meet the aesthetics of slowness. They distribute tasks to each day and time to each task. Then they can get a leisurliness that provides a spiritual comfort. Therefore, aesthetics of slowness cannot be separated from leisureliness.

What lessons can people learn from stopping their busy lives and embracing slowness?
A: People can find hints for stepping forward in their work if they stop and objectively look at it from a distance. Furthermore, it will cut down time to straighten out mistakes made while rushing to finish something. Also, scientists may need both imagination and creativity, but if they just cling to hard work, they cannot raise imagination. They can only raise their application abilities. Looking from a different perspective, they realize all things are related to each other.
B: Slow living is the gate to freedom. People should slow down and realize the purpose of life and their identity. To live a spiritually rich life, it is necessary to put down worries about living. It is dangerous that the most important thing in many people’s life is being forgotten. Calmness helps people to approach things objectively and live together.

Do you have other comments for Koreans or Postechians?
A: The aesthetics of slowness is the opposite of rushing. In the middle of a rush, there is only speed, but in the middle of the aesthetics of slowness, there is enjoyment. Speed and convenience do not make people healthy and happy, but tranquility and inconvenience help people to develop a healthy spirit.
B: Life is not about speed, but direction. The faster the speed of life is the narrower the view and the greater the chance for misdirection, which will finally causes a big disaster at the end of the speed.
Both authors suggest that people stop fast lives to feel the aesthetics of slowness, which will allow them to achieve ultimately what they pursue. This era is called “the war of speed” but among societies, the attitude to receive slowness is very important, especially for engineering students who will lead the development of technology.
