POSTECH ranked 9th in the University Ranking: Asia 2014 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an institute of the United Kingdom that evaluates world universities with Chosun Newspaper. In 2009 the evaluation was published first and only three universities (KAIST, SNU and POSTECH) in Korea ranked in Top 20. But last year the number increased to five (SNU, KAIST, POSTECH, Yonsei and Korea University) and in 2014 Sungkyunkwan University is also included in Top 20. QS said, “The balance of power in Asia has started shaking. Korea has supported universities consistently so Korean universities have increased in evaluation”. It evaluated with nine performance indicators (numbers in parentheses are POSTECH’s scores in each category): Academic Reputation (87.5), Employer Reputation (90.3), and Faculty to Student  (100.0), Citations per Paper (99.6), Papers per Faculty (99.6), International Faculty (88.5), International Students (35.9), Inbound Exchange (74.9) and Outbound Exchange (50.6). POSTECH dropped two ranks from its 7th place ranking last year. Because POSTECH has a short history and the number of students is smaller than that of other universities, POSTECH could not get a high record in some categories. But, in Citations per Paper, which indicates the quality of theses, POSTECH ranked 5th in Asia and first in Korea. It also scored high in Papers per Faculty. In addition, Faculty to Student Ratio, which shows the condition of education, got 100.0. In this evaluation, KAIST increased from 6th to 2nd, the highest rank in Korea, and SNU ranked 4th, the same as last year. Experts said “Top 10 of World University Rankings can come true if POSTECH and KAIST continue the competition in good faith”.
