Professor Jeon Sang Min (CE), Donghoon Kwon (CE Ph.D. candidate), and Doctor Jinmyoung Joo (Ph.D.) developed magne- tophoretic chromatography, which can verify whether a food poisoning bacteria exists in just 30 min.
They injected paramagnetic nanoparticles into a food poisoning bacteria solution. The paramagnetic particles were attached with antibody, which only reacts to food poisoning bacteria. Polymer solution (Polyethylene Glycol) that does not mix with food poisoning bacteria and a permanent magnet was used to separate the paramagnetic nanoparticles combined with food poisoning bacteria. They discovered that low concentration of bacteria in food can be detected through experiments with vibrios and salmonellas, causative agents of food poisoning. Moreover, the cost of this procedure is relatively low because it only requires polyethylene Glycol solution and magnetic iron oxide.
This achievement was published on “Analytical Chemistry” and supported by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
