Park Dong Young (ME Ph.D. candi- date) won the bronze medal in the 11th Korean Aerospace Indust- ries (KAI) Aero- space Thesis Award. The ceremony was held on Oct. 30 at the media conference room in ADEX 2013 exhibition hall, Seoul.
KAI Aerospace Thesis Award aims to inspire both undergraduate and graduate students to pursue their interest in aerospace and to encourage further research on such industries, which all boils down to development of future Korean prospects.
Several theses with creative and outside-the-box ideas were sorted out after a thorough examination by committees of the Korean Society for Aeronautical & Space Sciences (KSAS).
Park’s award-winning thesis was based on the sintering nature of alloying rhenium on the development of the nozzle throat of a non-ablation rocket, which has a role of maintaining uniform thrust of the rocket in conditions of high pressure and temperature, above 2200 degree of celsius. Rhenium, one of the elements known to be difficult to manufacture due to its characteristics, was analyzed in order to predict its sintering nature.
