POSTECH is constructing a new building called ‘C5’ to invigorate fusion research and cultivate globally outstanding, creative individuals. The name ‘C5’ stands for Collaboration Convergence Consilience Creativity Center. Those five words that start with “C” clearly demonstrate the purposes of building C5.
With a total budget of 31.5 billion KRW, the size of this building will be 15,960 square meters per floor, and it will be a 7 story building (excluding the basement). POSTECH is expecting C5 to be completed by the end of next year. Research spaces from the fourth floor to the seventh floor will be large scale open space areas, where many research teams will be able to freely use for their own purposes of research, optimizing the fusion projects. Also, as the department of Creative IT Engineering will be located in the building, the first floor to the third floor will be designated as ‘Creative Space’ to encourage CiTE students to think creatively and to cultivate their talents in IT industries. This Creative Space was originally located on the 6th floor of the National Institute for Nanomaterials Technology.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the C5 was held on the construction site of the C5 on the opposite side of Tae-Joon Park Digital Library on Oct. 11. In the ceremony, about 200 celebrities attended, including President Yongmin Kim, various university officials, and the mayor of Pohang, to celebrate the first step of the C5 building, expecting it to be beneficial to numerous researchers and students.
