In Facebook there is a function called “People you may know.” It suggests people its user may know, such as old friends, teachers, and even ex-girlfriends. So far, this has been the work of several hundreds of high-performance computers. However, new technology is drawing people’s attentions as it does this work with just one normal performance computer.
Professor Wook-Shin Han (CiTE, CSE) and Professor Hwanjo Yu (CSE) developed a technique “TurboGraph.” Compared to the previous technologies which took 13 minutes with 100 computers to deal with the data from Twitter, “TurboGraph” took only 3.7 minutes with a single computer to process the same amount of data. This was presented in KDD 2013, an international seminar on data-mining
The research team expects this technique to be applied in a variety of fields. Prof. Han said, “With this technology, one will be able to process great amounts of data in a short time. Therefore, it will be not only helpful to those SNS businesses but also apply as much as to data-processing, biology, and chemistry.”
