Prof. Lee received this award for her contributions towards the understanding of the ABC transporters’ role in a wide range of plant processes. From the numerous types of plant ABC transporters, her lab has demonstrated how the transporters participate in a variety of processes including micronutrient transport, tolerance to toxic metals and metalloids, transport of abscisic acid, and lipid metabolism. One of the most significant discoveries was an arsenic-phytochelating transporter, which provides the potential to develop low-arsenic rice that could benefit millions of people in Southeast Asia suffering from the consummation of arsenic-contaminated rice. The discovery of abscisic acid transporter can also provide a new avenue for engineering plants resistant to drought.
In 2004, Prof. Lee was selected as the “Scientists I want to be like”, and in 2008, she received the L’Oreal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science.
