No one could deny the fact that science and technology has contributed to the growth of Korea. The reason why Korea, one of the world’s poorest counties right after the Korean War, has risen rapidly as a global economic power is its investment in science and technology. However, some promising students are increasingly avoiding natural science and engineering fields. Even worse, the current scientific technology policies also do not encourage people to focus on or solve this problem. Only eight percent of the members in the 19th National Assembly have backgrounds in natural science or engineering. The voices of scientists and engineers are still weak in politics. In this situation, the moods of harmony sprang up to express their views fearlessly. Students who are in universities of natural sciences or engineering are also no exception. Last year, the Second Students Union of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), called “EEoulim,” suggested the necessity of the Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint Meeting and the Undergraduate Association of POSTECH, and Student Association of KAIST and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) agreed with that suggestion. The Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint Meeting representing opinions of students has been established and the ceremony of launching the Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint Meeting was held on Oct. 7, 2012 in KAIST.
The objectives of the Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint meeting are as follows. First, student bodies of POSTECH, KAIST, GIST, and UNIST consent to form one voice contributing to the advancement of science and technology. Second, they promote the rights and interests of students and strive to develop a society of students by communicating with one another. Third, they lay the foundation for the continuous cooperation.
However, as Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint Meeting was organized last year, it is still lacking in many things and there have been no concrete accomplishments. As it is still in its infancy, it has not gone as well as planned. The Student Association of GIST is not participated in the meeting yet this year because a new Student Association has not been organized yet. In addition, KAIST is urgently dealing with internal problems. Those problems are crying out to be solved to invigorate meeting.
Therefore, the most important plan is to build up the foundation and to enact the articles of association in 2013. They will also discuss and survey about how the treatments of scientists and engineers could be improved and plan to make a forum that will promote cultural exchange between universities. The Science & Technology Specialized Universities Joint Meeting will have a great effect on society and become an important entity in the future.
