Professor Dong Soo Hwang (SEE, POSTI) and his res- earch group succeeded in measuring the strength of cation-π interaction for the first time.
Cation-π interaction is an interaction between π system of aromatic ring and adjacent positive charges. Since it maintains its high strength in aqueous solution, it is widely present in living organisms.
Until now, the strength of cation-π interaction has been calculated by computer simulation. The research group actually measured it using surface forces apparatus (SFA). They also probed the mechanical nature of cation-π interaction between neurotransmitter acetylcholine and its receptor.
Prof. Hwang explained, “this study can be useful in developing macromolecular materials such as medicine and underwater adhesive. Moreover, it will help researchers study the mechanism of addiction to nicotine, which is known to form cation-π interaction with its receptor like acetylcholine.”
The paper was published in the online edition of Angewandte Chemie, a prestigious chemistry journal, on Feb.28.
