Clean Steel in the Future Symposium was held from May 31 to Jun 1 at the auditorium of GIFT. It also included the official retirement ceremony of Professor Hae-Geon Lee. It consisted of a welcome reception on the first day at POSCO International Center at 4 PM and lectures delivered by guest professors on the following day at 8 AM. Professors and students were invited to celebrate Prof. Lee and meet renowned professors from academia and industries.
Prof. Lee had been working at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, until he was appointed to Department of Materials Science and Engineering at POSTECH in 1997. He has been a respected professor and a world class scholar in the field of clean steel technology. In addition, he established the unique institute for research and education in ferrous metallurgy, GIFT and served as the Dean from 2001 to 2010.
The symposium started with Dr. Dong-Joon Min’s opening remarks and intro-duction of Prof. Lee. Then, 16 reputable professors from various universities and companies presented their lectures on the stage. They covered topics from steel makings to continuous casting in order to discuss issues in the production of clean steel. The discussion continued until 6 PM, after which the participants had a dinner at the POSCO International Center, following the closing remarks from the current Dean Prof. Chong Soo Lee.
The symposium was sponsored by Subcommittee of Steel, Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, and POSCO.
