Ten domestic and overseas scholars, including Professor Kimoon Kim (Advanced Materials Science), Prof. Charles Surh (Integrative Biosicences & Biotechnology), Distinguished Prof. Yong-Geun Oh (Math), and Distinguished Prof. Sang-Wook Cheong (Phys) were appointed as the directors for the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). The selected leaders are considered the experts in their respective research areas with outstanding publications, countless honors and prizes, and strong recommendations from world-class scholars.
IBS is the core research institute established by the International Science and Business Belt that will be completed by 2017 in Daedeok, Daejeon. There will be 50 research organizations, and each leader will be provided with yearly financial support of 10 billion KRW. Besides astonishing funding, the leaders will be given authorities such as overseeing overall operation and independence of research.
The four-month selection process received 101 applicants of which only ten were selected through an open symposium, closed debate, and recommendations from international scholars. The selected leaders will assume the new position as early as June to start leading their research organizations either in Daedeok or at their respective university.
IBS President Se-Jung Oh stated, “The research leaders will receive similar treatment as those at the world class research institute such as Max Planck Institute.” He further added, “Though they will have to be evaluated, we will provide at least ten years of steady research environment (as it is characteristic for basic science) for the leaders.”
IBS now accepts applications through this month for the second selection process, and the evaluation will begin in June.
