Dr. Kyung-Ryul Kim and his research team of PAL (Pohang Accelerator Laboratory) have developed the resonance control cooling system for high-power linear accelerator. The device was transferred to HMT (CEO Jun-taek No) after signing an agreement at the administrative building of PAL at 11:20 AM on Apr. 20.
Recently, it has become one of the core technologies to improve the beam energy output of the accelerators. This technology not only cools down the system,  but also precisely controls the temperature at the optimal operation temperature.
Normal conducting accele- rators such as the ones installed at PAL are designed to operate at the temperature range of 21~33℃.They accelerate electrons by applying microwave at a certain frequency, but a lot of heat is dissipated from the system. The cooling system comes in to subdue the soaring temperature. It also controls the temperature to be optimal temperature with precision to ±0.1℃ so that the structure can maintain the same resonance structure to stay in phase with the microwave.
The device was already tested and proven to be effective in the proton accelerator at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Currently, eight of them have been manufactured for use, and three more are scheduled to be produced.
Dr. Kim stated, “High-power cooling system for accelerator is one of the core technologies to guarantee high performance. It will contribute greatly to the efficiency of operation, ease of maintenance, and improvement of beam energy output.”
