2012 POSTECH International Winter School-BSD (The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture) was held in the Mathematical Building between Jan. 6-7 and 9-14.

In mathematics, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is an open problem in the field of number theory and 1,000,000 USD prize for the first correct proof is offered to this challenging mathematical question.

Under the aim of understanding the current state of knowledge on this unsolved question, the winter school consisted of several lecture series by leading experts including Distinguished Prof. J. Coates (Cambridge University) on the conjecture, problem session as well as time for interaction between young researchers and senior faculty. The winter school was supported by PMI (Pohang Mathematical Institute), Dept. of Mathematics, The Basic Science Research Institute (BSRI), and the NRF-Research Fund.

Prof. Young Ju Choie, an organizer of this winter school said, “I expect that passion too challenging for the impregnable problem of the 21st century invites you to the festival of mathematics that cold-weather forgot.”
