Professor Bae Myoungjean with the Department of Mathematics received the Sangsan Young Mathematicians award at the 2011 Korean Mathematical Society Fall Meeting on Oct. 21.

This award is given to young mathematicians that received their doctorate degrees only within five years but with outstanding contributions to the academia. The second award winner along with Prof. Bae is a research fellow Lee Jungyun in the School of Mathematics at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study.

Prof. Bae was selected to receive this honor for her achievements in investigating the optimized pattern of the solution to regular shock reflection in sonic circle. She also worked in proving the uniqueness and stability of the transonic shock formed in the multi-dimensional divergent nozzles.

To briefly explain her academic background, Prof. Bae received her B.S. at Yonsei University and her M.S. and Ph.D. at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Recently appointed as an assistant professor, Prof. Bae focuses her research in nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical fluid dynamics.
