University ranking counted by JoongAng Daily published

POSTECH ranked second in the overall score of the ‘2011 National University and Department Rankings’ conducted by JoongAng Daily. KAIST held the top ranking, and Seoul National University (SNU) took the third place. This order of the top three universities is the same from last year’s evaluation . Yonsei University held the fourth rank while Korea University (KU) and SungKyunKwan University (SKKU) stood for the fifth place together.

However, the evaluation of the departments of natural science and engineering reflects POSTECH is the overwhelming first. Following POSTECH, which scored 87, KAIST and SNU held the second place together at a score of 61. Thus POSTECH shows powerful academic performances in its specialties.

JoongAng Daily has conducted ‘National University and Department Rankings’ since 1994. It has also announced the ranking of two key branches including natural science & engineering and humanities & social studies, from the last year. This year’s evaluation examines over 100 universities in Korea, and it was published in JoongAng Daily on Sep. 26.

Moreover, it conducted the ranking of each department as well. In this case of surveying 123 Korean universities, JoongAng Daily presented the ranking of 17 departments of study, including nine humanities and social science departments and eight natural science and engineering. This survey was published on Sep. 8 and 9.

POSTECH ranked the highest in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics, out of eight departments in the category. The highest rank indicates the top 2.28% among the universities with the relevant department. Most notable in the rankings is that POSTECH Department of Mathematics is selected as the top in its division to provide the most yearly institutional research funds with 29 million KRW.

As with previous years, three universities once again proved to be the most dominant in this area. SNU and KAIST ranked the highest in the most departments with four “highest ranked” departments, followed by POSTECH with three.
