An innovation of waterproofing was made by Prof. Kijung Yong and Ph. D candidate Seunghyup Lee who belongs to POSTECH chemical engineering department. They developed stably operating electronic elements in wet conditions, using nano materials.

For this development, Prof Yong’s research result was put in Advanced Materials online. Prof. Yong said of his feelings after the achievement, “this development was a great job for our research team. And I’d like to credit this development to Seunghyup Lee, because he impassionedly has helped me for one year to do this research .”

Before this achievement, one year ago, they were inspired by ‘Lotus effect,’ Lotus effect is originated in the nature of the lotus which always maintains clean condition. So, the research team applied this quality thereby attaching nano scale wires on electronic micro elements. By doing so, nano wires were made to resemble the lotus’s microscopic bump. Also, Prof. Yong specially treated the surface of the devices to reproduce the grease of lotus’s bump.

This ground breaking innovation makes use of electronic elements in drenching conditions a breeze. The research team also applied this development to Resistive RAM which has been spotlighted because of its  keeping ability after being turned off.
