Promoting a mix of science and culture

The POSTECH Orchestra successfully finished its 5th annual concert on Mar. 10 at 7:30 PM in the Grand Auditorium. It kicked off the first performance of the Culture Colloquium, one of the courses provided to undergraduates.

Sponsored by Professor Jung Ki Kim of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, the POSTECH Orchestra was founded in February 2006 in order to contribute to POSTECH’s unique cultural program that brings science and culture together.

Under the passionate and seasoned leadership of conductor Ui Hwan Jeong, the orchestra showed off their skills. The program included selected pieces that are relatively well known to the public. The opening music was the Egmont Overture, Op. 84, by Ludwig van Beethoven. This was followed by Symphony No. 8 in B Minor by Franz Schubert, better known as the ‘Unfinished Symphony’. Finally, the climax of the concert was Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

The POSTECH Orchestra, as its name suggests, consists mostly of the POSTECH members including undergraduates, graduates, and even the faculty. Due to the size of the school and tough practice schedule, however, not every instrument part can be filled in by POSTECH members. These are compensated with freelance musicians for successful concerts.
