306 B.S. 200 M.S. 194 Ph. D. degrees will be conferred

The 2010 POSTECH Commencement Ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11 AM in the POSTECH Gymnasium today (Feb. 11). Special guests such as President Sunggi Baik, Chairman of the Board Lee Gu-Taek, the founding chairman Tae-Joon Park, and other dignified guests are invited to congratulate 700 graduates on this honorable day.
The commemorative tree planting took place on the west lawn of the Student Union Building at 3:30 PM on the 10th. The student procession starts at 10:40 AM today and the main ceremony begins at 11 AM in the following order: the pledge of allegiance, report on academic affairs, commencement address by the President, complimentary address by the chairman of the board, congratulatory address from the founding chairman, conferrals, honors and awards, student address, and the singing of the alma mater. Following the ceremony is the reception starting at 12:50 PM at the POSCO International Center.
At the 2010 Commencement Ceremony, which is the 22nd commencement, 306 B.S., 200 M.S., 194 Ph. D., a total of 700 graduates will receive their degrees (including those who graduated in August 2010). In particular, Peter S. Kim of the Merck Research Laboratories will receive his 3rd POSTECH honorary doctorate degree in science.
The honor of undergraduate valedictorian goes to Seong-Hoon Woo (MSE ‘07). He attained a GPA of 4.16 out of 4.3, which is a hair short of the highest GPA record of 4.21.
This graduating class produced 19 graduates who graduated as early as within 6 or 7 semesters. There are foreign students receiving degrees at this year’s commencement ceremony, too. 12 M.S. and 7 Ph.D. degrees will be given to foreign students from POSTECH graduate schools, including GIFT and GSIT.
The 5th annual ‘Sung-Kee Chung Thesis Paper Award’ (natural sciences) goes to Choi Young-Jun (Ph.D. MATH), and the ‘Chang Kun Soo Thesis Paper Award’ (engineering) goes to Kim Chul-Ju (Ph.D. MSE). These awards were established through the generous donations of recently retired Professor Sung-Kee Chung of Chemistry Department and POSTECH Professor Emeritus Chang Kun Soo of Chemical Engineering Department.
The titles of the papers are: “On the Differential Geometric Characterization of the Lee Models” published in the Journal of Geometric Analysis and “Diameter-Dependent Internal Gain in Ohmic Ge Nanowire Photodetectors” published in the Nano Letters, respectively.
Finally, the Mueunjae Award, which is presented to the undergraduate who contributed greatly to the university’s development or in raising its reputation, goes to Kim Jae-Nyeong (PHYS ‘07).
