Dear POSTECH Family members,

The year 2010 is drawing to its end. I am deeply thankful to all faculty, staff, students, and researchers of POSTECH for their dedication and hard work for the continued advancement of the University. I wish all members of POSTECH a healthy and happy new year in 2011.

Looking back, we devoted ourselves this year to establishing a solid foundation for POSTECH Vision 2020 under challenging circumstances. This year, we affirmed that our Vision 2020 is not a mere slogan or wishy-washy hope, but achievable with our unity, passion, and earnest exertion. We cherish the year 2010.

This year we had a feat even beyond our expectations. We reached the 28th in the world rankings published in The Times of London and positioned POSTECH in the world top 30 for the first time for any Korean university. We have secured a government funding for constructing the 4th generation synchrotron light source and established a POSTECH branch of the Max Planck Institute  (MPI) of Germany, which has produced the largest number of Nobel Laureates in the past 30 years. These achievements surely not only add momentum to POSTECH’s giant step toward the top science and engineering university, but also further push the Korea’s sciences closer to a Nobel Prize.

The passion and efforts of POSTECH family for the past 24 years have spawned remarkable accomplishments and opened a new chapter of POSTECH history in 2010. I once again express my deep gratitude for POSTECH members’ incessant and dedicated work.

With the Year 2010 behind us and now at the threshold of the New Year of 2011, let us all have a fresh start with new resolutions. The year 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the University, which is a person’s age of high-spirited youth and hopefulness. We shall together create a mature and energetic campus culture.

To leapfrog beyond Korea to the top research-oriented science and technology university in the world, we must push the globalization plan supported by the University Foundation to completion. The plan includes Bilingual Campus, invitation of Distinguished World-class Scholars, nurturing of the Rising Stars, and a Global R&D Hub.  Trust, a sharing of ideas and vision, and participation among all members of POSTECH are most crucial in achieving our goal of becoming a true top global university.

I have no doubt about Postechians’ incomparable love and pride for the University. Our unparalleled advance and success could not be possible without POSTECH members’ staunch support for the university and relentless spirit of challenging. Furthermore, POSTECH Vision 2020 cannot be fulfilled without mutual trust and understanding among us.

In a crucial role in the University as the president, I will do my utmost to take an exemplary leadership, provide organizational improvement, and build up an advanced campus culture for smooth communication, productive debates and consent during my remaining term in office. I urge all members to express an active voice for suggestions, constructive criticisms and participation.

The New Year of 2011 is the Year of Rabbit. Rabbits possess excellent 360-degree sight and extremely acute hearing capability with large and long ears. I hope that we all broaden the horizons of our minds and listen to other’s humble opinions with a cooperative and understanding heart to promote a harmonious and full-fledged campus culture in the New Year of Rabbit.

May health and blessings be with you and your family.

Happy New Year!
