Professor Byeang Hyean Kim of the Department of Chemistry and Jin Kon Kim of the Department of Chemical Engineering were elected as regular members of the Korean Academy of Science and Engineering (KAST). KAST, founded in 1994, is the most prestigious among Korean academic societies of science and engineering.

Prof. Byeang Hyean Kim, who has worked at POSTECH since 1988, achieved many outcomes in the total synthesis of Nonactin, the development of new isosters including peptides, and the development of synthesis method for macrocyclic compounds. Especially, Prof. Kim first designed an effective DNA sensor system without any quencher, using a ‘Quencher-free Molecular Beacon’. The desirable outcome is highly applicable in industry and the system was applied for a patent in Korea and the U.S.

Prof. Jin Kon Kim, who was elected a fellow of American Physics Society last year, has published many results in polymers. He led research of developing functional nanomaterials including the discovery of new phase behavior of block copolymers, and developed a new memory storage material using that. Being a Korean representative in the Polymer Processing Society, he is expanding his base worldwide.

Launched for the role of a core private academy and non-governmental diplomatic organization, KAST currently  has 470 scholars as members, and 22 of them, including retired professors, work in POSTECH.
