On Nov. 13, in the Residential College (RC) conference room, there was a debate on the co-ed dormitory. The debate was hosted by the Women’s Student Council and the Dormitory Union.

Currently, POSTECH has nineteen student dormitories for males and three for females only. And two of them are co-ed. One of the two is the Dormitory for International Culture Exchange (DICE) and the other is the RC which is only for freshmen and sophomores.

According to the opening speech of Jeon Jin-seong, the head of the Dormitory Union, the purpose of the debate was to prepare for long-term measures against the variability of female entrance rate. As an example, if there are too many female freshmen in several consecutive years, there can be a shortage in the women’s dorms.

The official panel consisted of four people. However, as the debate touched sensitive issues such as the dramatic possibility of mistaken pregnancy when drunk in a co-ed dormitory, more audience members participated and added diverse opinions.

The conclusion after over an hour or more of debate was to turn one of the male’s dorms to a co-ed dorm in the short-term, and to suggest more buildings in the long-term.
