On Nov. 12, the POSTECH Science Cafe (PSC) was held in POSCO International Center Conference Room. It was the first event with Professor Seung-Jae Lee of Molecular Genetics of Aging Lab as the host-speaker.

The main purpose of the event was to provide a place for the discourse to conscilience. The participants were limited to the Master’s degree candidate. As a whole in this POSTECH Science Cafe, nine professors, one research professor, one researcher and three Ph.D. candidates participated. The fifty minutes of the conference were constituted of free questions, answers and discussions among the intellects.

The official title of the discourse was ‘Who wants to live forever?’ The summary of the abstract noted that slowing down aging is the desperate and common hope for human kind; for the accomplishment we need to find the cause of aging and ways to prevent aging.

During the conference, participants discussed topics on the scientific mechanisms behind aging, ways to find target genes for anti-aging, and the necessity of the development of anti-aging medicines.

Prof. Lee said that the phenomenon of aging is very complex. For the attainment of the objective, we need interdisciplinary research with the experts of natural science, medical science, engineering and sociology.

Beginning with this conference, there will be more conferences in name of POSTECH Science Cafe 8 times a semester in future. With Prof. Hyunbo Cho, the head of the committee and one or two flexibly chosen committee member depending on the subject area, PSC will continue on.
