The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) hosted two special public lectures on Oct. 10 about graphene, the material behind the 2010 Noble Prize in Physics. This lecture specifically targeted the general public, so that anyone could come and listen.

These lectures were planned to celebrate the opening of Institute of Edge of Theoretical Science (IES), and as  a part of APCTP’s Science Communication Forum/Lecture series.

With the title “What makes Graphene so interesting?”, the first lecture was delivered by Professor Young-Woo Son of the Korea Institute for Advanced Study. It was then followed by the lecture of Professor Byung Hee Hong of SungKyunKwan University with the title “Our Future with Graphene”.

The lectures held more meaning in that they were also to celebrate Korea’s current status in graphene application. The winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Konstatin Novoselov of England’s University of Manchester, praised “Korea as the world’s leader in graphene application research.”

The head of IES, Professor Seunghwan Kim, also emphasized that  “the world’s graphene application leaders are delivering the lectures to give the gist of graphene.”
