Many Postechians are night people. They prefer to work at late night and sleep until the outside is fully bright. However, there are people who work hard for university members from dawn through the early morning, when only a few people can be seen. They work for public welfare, health and security. Without them, the daily lives of Postechians could not last even for a day. They are also contributors to POSTECH’s 28th place at the 2010-11 world university ranking by Times Higher Education. This  story is about service providers of dawn whom many people are not aware of.

University Patrol (5:40 AM)

In daytime at POSTECH, a patrol car going around the campus can be easily seen. At the central situation room, officers are always prepared for security. The central situation room operates 24 hours a day. In addition to the five campus patrols during daytime, a patrol car also travels four times across the campus at night. According to the patrol, there are two kinds of Postechians who appear at that time, drunk Postechians and all-nighter Postechians. Then, the patrolman sometimes offers a ride to drunk people. However, he did not forget a short comment to hard-studying students. That is, he is proud of Postechians and hopes students to study more and contribute to the nation.

Tae-Joon Park Digital Library (6:00 AM)

As you know, the campus library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Postechians can make use of the library, which offers the best environment for students in Korea, to build deep knowledge and prepare their future. There is no doubt about that the efforts of students at the library have contributed to POSTECH being 28th place in the world. Beside students, there is a nighttime keeper staying up all night to keep the library available. He must keep himself from falling asleep at his seat throughout the night.

‘Freedom’ Student Cafeteria (6:10 AM)

The opening time of the ‘Freedom’ student cafeteria is 7:30 am. Then, how much time is necessary for preparing the morning meal for thousands of students? An hour? No. Workers on morning duty come to the kitchen at 4:30 am every day. As you can see in the picture, the outside is still dark. Thinking of some Postechians who go to bed at that time, it is a little surprising. They prepare, and start cooking at 5:00 am. Nine cooks make two kinds of morning meals, Western and Korean.

Housing Office (6:20 AM)

If there is an emergency in dormitory at midnight, where should we go first? For any kind of emergency, the place we should call as soon as possible is the housing office. There are two overnight housing officers, in Dormitory 14 and residential college respectively. They take care of residences and physical plants. Like the library keeper, they should keep in their seat all night, without any contact to the outside. The officer at early morning seemed very tired and bored.
