POSTECH reached 28th place globally according to the 2010-11 world university ranking conducted by The Times Higher Education (THE) of Britain. This is the first time for a Korean university to rank within the top 30 in a world university ranking surveyed by global authorities.

In this year’s evaluation, which THE compiled data in partnership with a new information agency Thomson-Reuters, POSTECH attained outstanding scores in five categories: teaching (30%), research volume, income and reputation (30%), research influence measured by citations (32.5%), industry income (2.5%) and international mix (5%). Of these indicators, POSTECH especially stood out on citations (96.5/100pts) and industry income (100/100pts).

POSTECH jumped to 28th place as THE employed a revised methodology that puts more weight on research and teaching and less on subjective factors such as reputation.

The U.S held the top of the table as an academic powerhouse, with Harvard University, CALTECH, MIT, Stanford University, and Princeton University listing at the front. Hong Kong University (21th) topped in Asia, University of  Tokyo (26th) came second and POSTECH narrowly took the third spot. Among Korean institutions, three named in the world top 200 behind POSTECH: KAIST at 79th, SNU at 109th and Yonsei University at 190th.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2006, POSTECH proclaimed “Vision 2020” which states that POSTECH will strive to acheive status among the world’s top 20 research-oriented universities. The POSTECH has now stepped closer to achieving that vision.
