An hourglass-style medicine transmitter saves need to go to hospital

From now on, people who are suffering from dwarfism and cancer do not need to go to the hospital as regularly as before, thanks to an hourglass-type medicine transmitter.

An hourglass-type medicine transmitter, developed by POSTECH’s Prof. Jin Kon Kim (School of Environmental Science and Engineering), post-doc. Seung Yun Yang (Chemical Engineering), Jeong A Yang, and Kwan Yong Choi (Life Science), will transmit medicine constantly through nano-sized cylinder channels for more than two months. This result was published in the leading journal, ACS Nano on July. 27, and was awarded the research prize at the Roche Marco Polo Symposium.

Using the property of self-assembled block copolymers, like the principle of an hourglass, nano-sized cylinder channels induce single file diffusion and regulate the channels’ size about 1.7 times of protein. Because only one protein molecule can pass its channel at once, it can transmit medicine at constant speed, regardless of the amount of the medicine. This research has been supported by Shinpoong Co.
