South Korea’s internationally famed conductor Maestro Gum Nan Se provided a unique musical experience to both citizens of Pohang and students interested in music from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7 at POSTECH. Hosted by POSTECH and the Euro-Asian Corporation, the Gum Nan Se Music Festival and Academy consisted of three concerts.

Started with the Opening Concert performed by the Euro-Asian Strings on Aug. 1, the Chamber Concert was held on Aug. 6. Its program included various chamber repertoires and a special performance by the students of Gyeongbuk Arts High School. The Symphonic Concert, which was performed by the instructors and the students, concluded the Festival on Aug. 7.
While every concert started at 8 p.m., waiting lines formed as early as 6:30 p.m. Also, every concert was a full house with people even filling up the aisles. To spice up already delightful concerts, Maestro Gum added detailed, playful background information on each program.

Maestro Gum clarified that the aims of this event were to teach the students how to play together in an ensemble, and give opportunities for them to perform repertoires that are hard to come across at the amateur level. The purpose coincides with the new trend in science; scientists must cooperate with each other.

The fact that non-music major students also participated in this event confers another meaning. Students from various schools such as POSTECH and KAIST boasted their playing skills proficient enough to handle the program. A fourth-year Clarinet Performance major Kang Yea-eun of Sookmyung Women’s University commented that “it was a delightful chance to quench musical thirst and make new friends majoring in different areas.”

Generously sponsored by KISWIRE, the concerts were held two years in a row with free admission.
