Prof. Cha Receives a Citation for Bioadhesive Research

Prof. Hyung Joon Cha of the Chemical Engineering Department is going to receive the Prime Minister’s citation at the 15th annual Sea Day Event on Jun. 31. Prof. Cha is receiving this honor for his contribution in developing a revolutionary biomedical adhesive from the bioadhesive extracted from marine mussels. He not only made this bioadhesive into a product for the first time in the world, but also gave prospects for commercialization of environmentally friendly bioadhesive products.

With this research, he has published fourteen papers, and applied for nineteen international patents and four domestic patents. Prof. Cha, who is receiving the spot light from academia for his research, earned his bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University. Before he came to POSTECH in 1999, Prof. Cha worked at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology and the University of Maryland. 

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs hosts the Sea Day Event annually to celebrate Sea Day. The Ministry carefully selects outstanding entrepreneurs, researchers, crewmen, or those in the fishing industry who contribute greatly to the development of oceanic fishing industry, and awards them with a medal and citation.
