Yu Ji-hoon, who is in the combined master’s and doctorate program of the Department of Material Science and Engineering under professor Hyoungseop Kim, received the Best Poster Gold Medal Award in Ultrafine Grained Materials VI (UFG6), the biggest symposium of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) 2010 held in Seattle, USA.

He proposed a new evaluation method for a property of matter without experiments using the Finite Element Method, after executing experiments and simulations of Equal Channel Angular Pressing in his paper ‘Analysis of Post-Equal Channel Angular Pressing Behavior by the Finite Element Method’. It was the first attempt to use such simulation in academia.

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, having 13,000 members in nearly 70 countries, is the biggest society in the fields of materials, minerals, and metals. The current paper competition is a part of the UFG6 Symposium, whose competitors are mostly rising postdoctoral researchers, making his award all the more meaningful.
