Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs President Jeong H. Kim receives an honorary doctorate on Feb. 17, at the 2009 commencement ceremony.

President Kim immigrated to the United States in 1975 when he was in the second grade of middle school. He overcame the hardships of adolescence and graduated from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. After that he sold his venture business to Lucent technology at the price of $1,100,000,000. He was the first Korean to rank in Forbes’ list of 400 richest people in U.S. In 2005 he was appointed as the first Korean to be the president of Bell Labs and drew the world’s attention.

POSTECH thought that president Kim’s talent as a global leader and the adventurism that he showed during his life was something that all scientists should learn from and appointed him with the first honorary doctorate.

“This is a huge personal honor and I will celebrate this with all the people that helped me in a positive way,” said President Kim when asked how he felt.

President Kim gives a special speech with the title ‘From Knowledge to Innovation’ in the POSCO International Center at 10 A.M. on Feb. 17.
