POSTECH, which has the only synchrotron radiation source laboratory in the country, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the RIKEN SPring-8 Center of Japan, which is the biggest synchrotron radiation source laboratory in the world.

The MOU was signed on Oct. 5 in Japan and both parties agreed on the interaction between the two centers, the use of laboratory facilities and equipment, and the co-hosting of seminars and science councils.

When this MOU comes into effect, a remote lab is to be installed in RIKEN for researchers from POSTECH who use  4th generation synchrotron radiation. Also, a laboratory will be built in POSTECH for the use of RIKEN researchers.

RIKEN is located in Wakou, Japan, and is an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It is the best basic and high-tech science research institute in Japan, and has five independent research facilities throughout the country.

The SPring-8 Center, which is located in the RIKEN Harima laboratory, is the world’s biggest synchrotron radiation source laboratory and is expected to complete the building of an XFEL 4th generation accelerator.

POSTECH is planning to expand the cooperation in the field of basic science, such as chemistry and physics, starting with the field of synchrotron radiation source.

Also, POSTECH is planning to be partners with RIKEN SPring-8 Center in the construction of its 4th generation accelerator which POSTECH is promoting through the MOU.

Furthermore, the MOU is expected to build ties for co-research between Korea and Japan. To celebrate the MOU, President Sunggi Baik of POSTECH and Tetsuya Ishikawa, the head of RIKEN, held joint workshop in SPring-8 Center in front of researchers.
