Professors Kwang S. Kim and Kimoon Kim of the Department of Chemistry were elected as POSTECH Fellows, and given extensive support such as an extension of the retirement age and the reward of a special bonus.

The two chemists who recieved global recognition due to  excellent research outcomes, were selected as the second subjects of  the POSTECH Fellow system, established in March in order to improve the standard of research and education of professors. Under the system, professors will receive a guarantee of retirement age by achieving distinguished research and education. The ones elected will receive special bonuses as much as 50,000,000 (KRW) per year, an extension of retirement age until the age of 70 if wanted, and an assignment of extra graduate students. In addition, they will be provided with university housing and laboratory use even after  the age of  65, which is the age for regular retirement. Also, they can open classes to teach students.

Professors Kimoon Kim and Kwang S. Kim are chemists who came into the spotlight of the chemical academic world with their remarkable research progress.

Recently, Professor Kwang S. Kim surprised not only chemistry scholars but also those of physics and optics by inventing a nano-sized lense which displays new physical phenomenon. Kim, who is one of the world’s best-known chemist in the quantum and nano chemistry field, is estimated to have opened a new field, molecular spin engineering.

Last June, he was elected as the first Korean member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, well-known as a ‘Hall of Fame’ in the quantum chemistry field.

Professor Kimoon Kim is known as the main author of the paper which was quoted the most over the past 10 years among domestic scientists. Kim, as an expert in the supermolecular chemistry field, has executed original research to develop a new bio-nano based technology with a chiral porosity substance. He is the only Korean scientist to be elected among the 100 scientists who have published the most papers in Angewandte Chemie, the world’s leading chemistry journal.

POSTECH elected Professor Bumman Kim from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Professor Gynheung An from the Department of Life Science as POSTECH Fellows for the first time last March.

The ‘POSTECH Fellow’ ceremony was held on Sep. 1 at 11:30 am in the POSCO International center. On this day, Professor Gynheung An and Bumman Kim, as well as Professor Kwang S. Kim and Kimoon Kim were inducted together.
