150 Billion Won Invested, Research and Development on Its Way

Joint Project of North Gyongsang Province and Uljin County


Our university is establishing the POSTECH Ocean Science an Technology Institute in Uljin to lead the country in the fields of oceanography and to produce experts on ocean research.


The POSTECH Ocean Science and Technology Institute, established by North Gyongsang Province and Uljin County, will offer master's and doctoral courses and is planing to recruit new students in 2011. The official opening will occur when the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology approves the establishment of the institute later this year.


Most of the first year basic courses will be given at the current campus and further courses, which include research and education, will be given in the institute in Uljin. A world-class research and education environment will be created, and will include such standards as the requirement of at least six months' worth of research in a foreign laboratory as well as overseas joint research .


By creating an educational research system which merges ocean science,  engineering and technology, research will focus mainly on marine energy, environment and resources. Also to be established will be a marine energy research center, which will works in conjunction on the development of the East Sea. a 40-ton research vessel will be in operation and a 200-ton research vessel will be constructed by 2012.


With 124.5 billion won for the POSTECH Ocean Science and Technology Institute and 30 billion won for marine research center, a total of 154.5 billion won will be invested in the project.


Once the POSTECH Ocean Science and Technology Institute is established, it is expected to upgrade the country's marine research level together with tactical marine enterprises. Also, by using our university's superior educational infrastructure, it will be possible to cultivate top-quality marine research experts. Professor Kim Gu, a world famous expert in the field of oceanography, has been scouted to head of the the POSTECH Ocean Science and Technology Institute. Efforts are undersway to gather both faculty and students.


President Baik Sunggi said that if Uljin is made the Mecca of marine science by investing largely on research on marine environment and resources, it will help upgrade the country's level in  the fields of oceanography.
