POSTECH has decided to offer the class of 2024 (those who entered POSTECH in 2020) a chance to participate in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023. They plan to dispatch students in the class of 2024 from Jan. 3 to Jan. 8, 2023, to Las Vegas, during which the CES 2023 is scheduled to take place (from Jan. 5-8, 2023, in Las Vegas). The CES is an annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and takes place at the beginning of each year at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States. At the event, new technologies and recent trends in the consumer electronics industry are presented.
Students in the class of 2024 who are enrolled in the second semester of 2022 are eligible to register. Each student will be funded with 3.2 million KRW which may be used to cover airfare, food and living expenses, travel insurance, etc. According to the notice POSTECH provided, the purpose of this event is to provide a valuable chance for the students in the class of 2024, as they were unable to experience campus life nor a variety of events due to the spread of COVID-19.
During the event, students are supposed to do a group mission and submit the results, although the specific mission has not yet been confirmed. Professor Jong Kyu Kim, the Vice President of Planning, said in an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper, that “the mission would not be like a class assignment, but is planned to allow students to freely enjoy the event.” Students are also supposed to cooperate with video shootings and interviews during the event and write a short review once they return to Korea.
President Moo Hwan Kim, in an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper, said he “hopes that students have some experience abroad before graduation to have a wider perspective about the world and also gain unforgettable memories.” In addition, he mentioned “the CES is designed in a way where every student may have first-hand experience of their interests or major fields such as electronics, mechanics, or biology. In particular, at the venture hall, students will be able to meet new people and interact with them to learn what others are thinking.” Prof. Kim also mentioned, “the CES will be a good opportunity to explore the broader world and suggest start-ups as a new vision in the future. Students will also be able to think about ingenious ideas to change the world by attending CES.” POSTECH will continue to support students who become interested in venture start-ups using the various school start-up programs.
In response to the event, students from the class of 2024 were thrilled and expressed high expectations. The Postech Times asked Choi Ji-hoon (IME), a student from the class of 2024, how he feels about the event. He replied, “Since the pandemic, we have been cut off from the outside world for so long. I am pretty sure that the school has taken this into consideration when planning this event. From CES 2023, I believe students would be able to experience what visions and future goals global companies are heading towards, or how novel technologies are developed. I also really look forward to having precious memories with my colleagues. These days, I am busy looking for available plane tickets. Imagining myself in the middle of CES 2023 and the United States makes me so excited that I cannot get it out of my head. I am pretty sure that these kinds of thoughts will last until my departure. I hope that this experience will bring me fresh excitement that lasts for several months.”
